Elementary Science Curriculum Support Project

Description:

The Elementary Science Curriculum Support Project provides teachers and students from first through sixth grade with lessons and materials needed to teach and learn in an active, hands-on, minds-on way.  The scope and sequence of the units were established through collaboration with representatives of the local school districts and Math/Science Center personnel.  The goal of the program is to move teachers, who may not be strong in science, away from reliance on textbooks and/or worksheets.

The unit kits are either developed locally or purchased from science education agencies or companies.  The Math/Science Center funds the creation and initial stocking of each unit kit and restocks consumable materials every year.  The unit kits are given to each school and become the property of the school.  Assessments for each unit are planned and should provide district teachers and administrators with evidence as to whether or not their students are mastering the benchmarks addressed by the unit.

 Five Year Goal:

All elementary students will learn science from an experiential, investigative approach made possible by the lessons and materials in the ESCSP unit kits.  Each unit will have a quality assessment that will let teachers and administrators know whether students truly understand the targeted material.
